The intern experience at Koch is designed to be an opportunity to find your passion, unleash your potential and create meaningful value. It's also meant to be a growth experience and was recently named one of the 2024 Top Internship Programs for National Intern Day. To help interns along this journey, Charles Koch, chairman and CEO of Koch, and Chase Koch, executive vice president of originations and partnerships, met with this year's group to share advice and answer their questions.

Below are five key takeaways on how interns can make the most of their time at Koch and prepare for a successful and fulfilling future.

Embrace new energy and knowledge

Chase shared that it’s crucial that they have the courage to speak up.

“You have to start with that mindset of even though I'm new and I'm learning, I can make a contribution,” he said.

You’re not just here to observe; you are here to add value. Your fresh perspectives and eagerness to learn can catalyze innovation and improvement within your team.

Focus on your strengths

"The secret for everybody is to find meaning in their life, to find a purpose, to find a North Star," Charles said.

This begins with identifying your unique gifts and understanding how you can use them to contribute. The more you align your work with your strengths and passions, the more meaningful and effective your contributions will be.

Foster mutual benefit

Chase said that he knows that trying to learn, understand and apply principles of human progress can be challenging. He said if that’s the case, then start with mutual benefit. Ask yourself, “How can I help someone?” By focusing on how you can add value to others, you create a positive and productive environment for yourself and those around you.

"Where I've succeeded is where I've focused on what I'm good at and find partners who are good at the other things that need to be done," Charles added.

This principle is vital for people who are still discovering their strengths. By collaborating with others who complement your skills, you create a synergistic environment where everyone thrives.

Learn from failures

Both Charles and Chase Koch acknowledge that failures are part of the journey to success. Chase opened up about his own experience when he was put in charge of Koch Fertilizer. After about a year, Chase realized that he wasn’t the best person for the job, and basically fired himself.

"What I realized was that that job was not for me, and there was someone else that was better suited for it," he said.

Rather than seeing this as a failure, he used it as a learning experience that helped him discover where he could make the biggest contribution.

“I don't mean if something's hard that you just bail and go try something,” he said. “What I do mean is try a lot of different things to discover.”

Be contribution motivated

Charles said that to be contribution motivated is, "having the desire to succeed by creating value for others in ways that are mutually beneficial for you.” This mindset not only leads to meaningful work but also fosters a collaborative and supportive environment. When you focus on creating value for others, you naturally cultivate relationships and networks that will support your growth and success.

He warned against being deficiency-motivated and told them to reject the urge to be defensive, reject feedback and complain without offering solutions.

An internship at Koch is a unique opportunity to discover your passions, develop your strengths, and create meaningful value. By embracing these key lessons from Charles and Chase Koch, you can maximize your impact and set the foundation for a fulfilling and successful career.
