Over the summer, Koch partnered with WSU Tech to engage elementary and middle school students in hands-on STEM learning
Throughout July, Koch supported WSU Tech in hosting two youth summer camps focused on hands-on learning in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
“We are always looking for opportunities that inspire students to explore and develop their unique passions and skills,” said Amy Johnson, community affairs manager at Koch. “WSU Tech’s summer camps give students an inside and engaging look at STEM concepts and careers.”
wo of these camps, Girls Rock Science and Grit and Gears, engaged nearly 350 Wichita-area third through eighth graders. The camps provided hands-on experience with science concepts and real-world skills, using WSU Tech’s state-of-the-art simulation technologies and precision tools.
“We're trying to inspire future STEM professionals,” said Paige Lauer, assistant director of K-8 STEM at WSU Tech. “Oftentimes, kids decide what they don't want to do at a really young age. The goal is to get kids thinking now about what they might want to do in the future.”
Camp activities went beyond the limits of the traditional classroom, giving students hands-on experience with high-demand skills, such as robotics, aerospace engineering, metalworking, emergency medical services and more.
“It’s really fun,” said Emma, a middle school camper who has been going to Girls Rock Science since the third grade. “It definitely showed me a lot more jobs that are out in the world that I didn’t know about.”
Koch employees volunteered their time to lead a session during the camps.
“Everyone was very curious, and I love to see that,” said Kayla Graff, a process safety engineer at Koch, who led a chemistry experiment with the girls' camp.
She said the positive response from students was a reminder of the importance of supporting a wide range of educational programs with WSU Tech.
“Our partnership with WSU Tech gives us an opportunity to inspire Wichita kids and help shape the community’s future," said Graff. "We care about our community, and I think that’s a big part of the partnership.”
WSU Tech is a leader in innovative, future-forward programs for learners of all ages. Koch supports WSU Tech’s vision of changing lives by creating meaningful opportunities for people to develop their skills and thrive in the workplace.
