Koch and partners, Baker Botts and the Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles, were recognized for their efforts to help people facing driver’s license suspensions in St. James Parish, Louisiana
What began as a collaboration between Koch’s legal team, Baker Botts and the Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles to help people get back behind the wheel has now become an award-winning effort.
Driver’s license clinics held in St. James Parish, Louisiana — home to Koch Methanol — were recognized by the Pro Bono Institute, earning the Koch Pro Bono Initiative this year’s CPBO Partner Award. This honor reflects not only the impact of these clinics, but the power of partnership and our principles in action.
Why it matters: In rural communities, access to legal services and support can be limited, and the process of working through red tape can be lengthy and complicated.
Providing a one-stop solution for people in the parish (and nearby communities) was essential to streamline the process, enabling many attendees to reduce or clear fines, get their licenses reinstated and even walk away with temporary paper licenses that same day.
A vicious cycle: Unpaid fines can balloon if left unpaid, creating an even greater problem and a feeling of helplessness. Pro bono clinics like this work to break this cycle by empowering people to get their mobility — and their dignity — back.
What we’re saying: “This is an excellent example of Koch’s philosophy in action, which is to succeed by helping others succeed — empowering people to transform their own lives,” said Charles Koch.
